Elias Heikki Eliass Hellbacka

Elias was in America 1888-96 and again in 1897. He first worked in the copper mines in Ishpeming Michigan, and later moved to Bessemer Michigan where he worked in the iron mines. He moved to Ely, MN in about 1890 where he worked at Chandler mine. He later opened a saloon in Ely, Minnesota which was sold in 1895, and headed back to Finland. He worked in Butte Montana in the mines for a period of time. He then went to Canada where he took the Northern Pacific Railroad to the East coast and boarded a boat to Finland to make another attempt to bring his family to the US. He succeeded. In 1902 he moved into 115 West Sheridan street. In 1907 Captain Toms of the Chandler mines picked out 6 or 7 men to go to Ely, Nevada to open the mines since there was no work in Ely. They stayed there about a year until the mines were operating well, they then returned to Ely where Elias returned to the Chandler Mine. On March 21, 1935 Elias was jailed for one year for second degree assault. He was released on January 20, 1936. The family had 2 cows which provided plenty of milk for the family. Butter was also made. Elias homestead property North of Cedar Lake and up the Cloquet line and the lake property came to be known as Helbacka lake.
